Summary
The BMW M5 is a four-door performance saloon and five-door ‘Touring’ estate – ‘M’-tuned versions of the BMW 5 Series executive car. This is the seventh-generation ‘G90’ M5 range, which arrived in UK showrooms in late 2024.
This latest iteration is more powerful than any of its predecessors, and is BMW M’s first saloon car to be a plug-in hybrid, being powered by the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, paired with an electric motor.
Described by the Auto Express team as a “seriously fast and deeply refined mega-saloon”, Parker’s Alan-Taylor Jones adds that “the lightning responses of the hybrid system mean its huge reserves of power are more easily tapped on the road, and it feels shockingly agile for something so big.”
While the M5 is more powerful than ever before, it is also heavier, Carbuyer’s Charlie Harvey commenting that this latest model range “it lacks some of its trademark driving flair.” The Top Gear team agrees, concluding that ” the added plug-in hybrid powertrain robs the car of natural delicacy. It’s a bruiser, but not especially satisfying.”
Beyond performance, several viewers note that the saloon and estate range shines in other areas, several arguing that it’s more economical and comfortable than the M5 it replaced, while other outlets have published mild criticism of the car’s eye-watering six-figure price tag.

The BMW M5 is a pretty expensive car to own and run, according to whole-life cost numbers provided exclusively to The Car Expert by our data partner, Clear Vehicle Data.
The good news is that the plug-in hybrid’s average fuel consumption of 121mpg is excellent (though you are unlikely to be able to stretch to 121 miles of travel on a full tank and charged battery in real world conditions).
While the M5’s 42-mile electric only range is competitive in the slim field of performance-focused PHEVs – it is beaten by the Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid’s 50-mile range and the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid’s 58-mile range.
Now on to the most eye-catching running cost expenses – the M5 and its six-figure price tag predictably sits in one of the highest insurance premium brackets, and the car’s predicted servicing and maintenance costs over the first five years of ownership are estimated to total nearly £9k.
